Southwest SIDS Research Institute Founded by Richard A. Hardoin, M.D.,F.A.A.P., and Judith A. Henslee, LMSW, the Southwest SIDS Research Institute exists to provide medical, educational, support, and research services to families and caretakers of SIDS, high risk, and normal healthy infants. With the initial support of Dow Chemical Co., Texas Division, and the generous contributions of the Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation of Midland, Michigan, the Institute opened its doors in November, 1984. Within a few years the Institute became a United Way participating agency. United Way funding has enabled the Institute to provide comprehensive medical services on a sliding scale basis. Educational and counseling services are available free of charge. The Institute is located at Brazosport Regional Health System in Lake Jackson, Texas, providing medical services throughout the state of Texas. Support, education, and research services are provided throughout the United States.The Southwest SIDS Research Institute is funded through private and corporate gifts, grants, fund-raisers, and private and third party reimbursement (Medicaid and private insurers). Richard A. Hardoin, MD Medical Director Dr. Richard A. Hardoin is the medical director and co-founder of the Southwest SIDS Research Institute. He has served the SIDS community in Brazoria County for over twenty-three years. Rick is one of the founding members of the National SIDS Alliance, formerly the National SIDS Foundation. In 1989 he received the Presidentâs Volunteer Action Award from President Ronald Reagan. He has served on the board of the Houston Chapter of the SIDS Alliance, a support group for parents who have lost their babies to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Dr. Hardoin is responsible for the analysis and interpretation of over 20,000 monitor readings of at-risk babies and has read thousands of infant sleep studies at the Institute. In September, 2007, Dr. Hardoin and Judith Henslee helped author, âThe Voice Within,â a book written to comfort families who have experienced premonitions, and then have lost their babies to SIDS. Henslee, LMSW Executive Director Judith Henslee holds a bachelorâs degree from Baylor University in Waco, Texas, and a masterâ degree in social work from the University of Texas in Austin. She is the wife and mother of 5 children. Mrs. Henslee is the co-founder and executive director of the Southwest SIDS Research Institute. She is the co-author of publications on sleep physiology in normal and high-risk populations and on the effect of premonitions of SIDS on grieving and healing. She served on a NICHD committee establishing SIDS research goals and an American Thoracic Society subcommittee on infant monitoring. Mrs. Henslee has been a member of the board of directors of the National SIDS Foundation and the National SIDS Alliance. She served on the board of the National Association of Apnea Professionals and the Training and Education Team of the National SIDS and Infant Death Program Support Center. Mrs. Henslee has been a member of the National Association of SIDS program Professionals and the National Association of Peri-natal Social Workers. She has been co-recipient of the Presidentâs Volunteer Action Award in 1987 and was named Outstanding Young Alumni at Baylor University. She has been an invited speaker at local, national, and international conferences. Mrs. Henslee enjoys raising, riding, and showing horses, and playing with her four grandchildren.
