Please join us for the 3rd Annual Walk/Run for Rex at 8:00am on November 14, 2015 at Los Patios in San Antonio, Texas. This annual event is held in memory of Rex Neal Van de Putte, who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) on May 7, 2013 at the age of 5 months.
With deaths due to unsafe sleep practices/ co-sleeping increasing in our country and state, safe sleep information is critical to the prevention of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID). Funds raised at the Walk/ Run for Rex will be used to provide Safe Sleep Kits to high risk infants, Pack N Plays to families unable to afford them, and risk reduction information to the general population. Together, we can save baby lives!

Rex Neal Van de Putte, a beautiful perfect baby, was welcomed into the world on November 16, 2012. Rex was a brother, son, & grandson, who was cherished by all who knew him. He was a ray of sunshine and source of joy to every life he touched. Tragically, despite the family’s adherence to safe sleep practices, Rex died unexpectedly on May 7, 2013 of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). He was only 5 months of age.
Following their loss, the Van de Putte’s embarked on the long, difficult journey of grief and recovery. They are committed to doing everything possible to stop preventable infant deaths. Since the 1980s, the incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome has dropped dramatically. Although it isn’t a guarantee, positioning babies alone, on their backs, in their cribs has gone a long way toward reducing the SIDS rate in the United States. Unfortunately, Sudden Unexpected Infant Death (SUID), which includes co-sleeping deaths, has increased four-fold during the same time period. And these baby deaths ARE preventable. In Bexar County alone, a baby dies because of unsafe sleep practices every 2.5 weeks. Hundreds of people – your friends and neighbors – are directly affected by these baby deaths.
Funds raised at November’s Rex’s Run, held in honor of Rex’s memory, will be used to provide Safe Sleep Kits and a limited number of Pack N Plays for qualifying families of Bexar County infants considered to be at risk. It is our sincerest hope that all new parents in Bexar County will incorporate safe sleep practices and encourage other caretakers and day care providers to do the same.
Plan to join us at this year’s Rex’s Run scheduled for November 14th 2015. Information about the run is included in this kit. Together, we look forward to that day when unexpected infant death is finally conquered. If you have any questions regarding safe sleep, the walk/ run for Rex, or the A.C.C.E.S.S. program which provides a very limited number of Pack N Plays to Bexar County families, feel free to call 800-245-7437.
