The Southwest SIDS Research Institute was established in November 1984 to advance knowledge in the field of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Only through research can we hope to understand and ultimately prevent this devastating tragedy. Through on-going research studies and collaboration with other institutions, we look forward to that day when the infant at risk is identifiable and his or her death preventable.
Through research, we have been able to develop a model of “Reduce the Risk” intervention that has been very successful in reducing the number of unexpected infant deaths in our county as well as several other out-reach counties. We hope to expand this model statewide in the future.
To help offset research costs, the “M’Lis & Jackson Brewer Memorial Research Fund” was established by their family. Jackson was a beautiful, apparently healthy baby boy who was found blue and not breathing – a victim of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Several years later, during a move, his mother was struck and killed in an automobile accident. Out of this multiple tragedy, the “M’Lis & Jackson Brewer Memorial Research Fund” was created. This fund – with your help – can make a difference in infant lives throughout our county, state, and country.
