It is estimated that one hundred individuals are affected by every SIDS loss. The shock and pain felt by the infant’s parents and caretakers deeply affect their lives for months and even years following their baby’s death. Depression, unwarranted feelings of guilt and a sense of hopelessness may be overwhelming. In addition, families caring for infants believed to be at risk for sudden death must cope with the on-going fear associated with responsibility for an infant who has significant cardio respiratory abnormalities. Compounding the emotional stress associated with caring for a vulnerable baby, medical costs may pose a financial crisis to the young family.
The purpose of this program is to provide support and counseling to families of SIDS and high-risk infants. Outcome objectives include grief resolution, maintenance of family integrity, and acceptance of the family’s life situation.
To help families affected by SIDS and families of high-risk infants, the Southwest SIDS Research Institute provides a multi-faceted support program including:
• Telephone Support
• Email Support
